Even with three energetic toddlers darting around and their boundless energy filling the room, it’s absolutely possible to capture stunning newborn photos.
As a newborn photographer, photographing such a dynamic and lively bunch requires a blend of confidence, stability, and a willingness to let the kids lead the session in the best sense. Here’s how I approach this beautiful chaos!
Big thank you to Jen and Vic from my parish who trusted me.

1. Embracing the Chaos with Confidence
When working with young children, especially a mix of a newborn and toddlers, I always approach the session with confidence. Children can pick up on nervousness or uncertainty, which might make them uneasy. You as parents can also help your little ones most by staying calm and letting me direct them.
2. Letting the Kids Lead the Session
Children under four have their own sense of timing and interest, which means they often have their own ideas about what they want to do. I embrace their curiosity and let them guide the session in a natural, fun way. Here’s how we can make the most of their lead:
- Interactive Moments: Encouraging the siblings to interact with the newborn in ways that feel natural to them. Whether it’s a gentle touch, a playful peek, or a spontaneous hug, these authentic moments are often the most precious.
- Playful Poses: Allowing the toddlers to be themselves and incorporate their playfulness into the photos. Instead of rigid poses, capturing them as they naturally engage with their new sibling and each other.
- Genuine Reactions: Focusing on capturing the genuine reactions and interactions between the children is huge! These candid shots often tell a more heartfelt story than staged images.
3. Keeping the Session Fun
Young children have short attention spans, so keeping the session light-hearted and enjoyable is essential. Using playful prompts and games to keep their interest and make the experience fun. In this case, their favorite “thing” to play with was… baby Theo himself!
